A Cinematic Food Commercial | Cinematography Final Project | 3rd Semester
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Layers of Indulgence is a cinematic food advertising film created as the final project for my third-semester Cinematography course at university.
The film explores the visual appeal of cake through a variety of flavours, colours, layers, and textures, transforming everyday dessert slices into a rich sensory experience.
During production, the original concept evolved when a specific raspberry cake was unavailable. Rather than limiting the film to a single product, I experimented with different cake slices, including chocolate, fruit, and vanilla varieties. This shift introduced greater visual diversity and created new opportunities to explore contrasting colours, textures, and compositions.
Through intimate close-ups, controlled lighting, selective focus, and deliberate camera movement, the film builds anticipation through the details of each cake before presenting the desserts as complete products.
CREATIVE CONCEPT
Reveal the experience before revealing the product.
The creative approach centres on the sensory qualities of cake. Instead of relying on a single hero product, the film moves between different varieties, highlighting their distinctive layers, creamy surfaces, rich colours, and delicate details.
The visual narrative progresses from abstract details to recognisable ingredients and textures, gradually revealing the cakes as a collection of indulgent experiences. The result is a film that celebrates the visual artistry of desserts through cinematography.
Cinematography & Visual Direction
The visual language combines intimate framing, shallow depth of field, rich tones, and controlled camera movement. Close-up compositions draw attention to sponge, cream, chocolate, fruit, and the layered structure of each slice.
Lighting and framing were adapted to the different products, allowing each cake’s colour and texture to remain visually distinct while maintaining a consistent cinematic style. The camera moves deliberately, keeping attention on the desserts rather than distracting from their details.
Visual Keywords: Indulgent · Textured · Rich · Sensory
Lighting Design
The lighting approach focuses on shaping the cakes through directional light, controlled highlights, and carefully balanced shadows. The contrast between darker tones and brighter details helps emphasise the depth, layers, and surface textures of the desserts.
The setup was designed to preserve detail across different cake varieties while creating dimensionality and visual separation from the background.
Colour & Mood
The colour palette draws from the natural variety of the desserts, including chocolate brown, cream, warm amber, and fruit-inspired tones. Colour correction and grading were used to maintain consistency across the footage while enhancing the richness and visual distinction of each cake.
Rather than forcing every shot into the same colour scheme, the grading supports the individual characteristics of the desserts within a cohesive overall look.
My Role & Contribution
I independently handled the cinematography, lighting, colour correction, colour grading, and editing. I was responsible for translating the concept into a visual sequence, adapting the cinematographic approach to the available products, and shaping the final film through composition, light, colour, and editing rhythm.
Production Approach
The film was shot at home rather than in a professional photography studio. Working with limited resources, I created a home-based product-shooting setup and adapted the available space and equipment to achieve the intended visual style.
The unavailability of the originally planned raspberry cake required a practical creative adjustment. By experimenting with different cake varieties, I turned a production limitation into an opportunity to explore a broader range of textures, colours, and visual compositions.
