Beyond the Image

Foley & Sound Design | Semester 3 Final Project

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Beyond the Image is a sound design project created as the final assignment for my third-semester Basics of Sound course at university. The project involved selecting a two-minute film and rebuilding its soundscape by creating, recording, editing, and layering audio elements to produce a complete audiovisual experience.
Working with basic equipment available at home, I recreated Foley effects, recorded environmental sounds, incorporated music, and constructed the different layers needed to bring the images to life. The objective was to explore how sound can establish atmosphere, communicate physical actions, reinforce visual storytelling, and shape the audience’s emotional experience.
The finished film is followed by a behind-the-scenes segment documenting my recording process and explaining how I created and integrated the different sound elements.

Creative Approach

Every sound tells part of the story.
The project approached sound as an essential part of cinematic storytelling rather than a background addition. Each sound element was considered in relation to the action on screen, its timing, its acoustic character, and its contribution to the overall scene.
Instead of relying solely on the original soundtrack, I constructed a new soundscape by combining individually created and recorded elements, environmental ambience, and music. The process required careful listening, experimentation, synchronisation, and layering to make the sound feel connected to the visual action.

Foley & Sound Design

A central part of the project was creating Foley effects to replace or supplement the original sounds in the selected film. Using everyday objects and basic recording equipment available at home, I experimented with different materials, movements, and recording techniques to produce sounds that matched the actions on screen.
The sound design process involved selecting appropriate sound sources, recording multiple takes, editing the recordings, and synchronising the resulting effects with the corresponding visual events.

Sound Layers & Mixing

The final soundtrack was constructed from several complementary layers:

  • Foley Effects: Custom-created sounds synchronised with physical actions on screen.
  • Environmental Ambience: Background sounds that establish the acoustic atmosphere of each scene.
  • Music: Musical elements supporting the film’s emotional tone and pacing.
  • Sound Editing & Layering: Arranging, synchronising, and balancing the individual elements into a coherent soundtrack.

The aim was to create a cohesive soundscape in which each element served a clear narrative or atmospheric purpose.

My Role & Contribution

I independently handled the sound-related work for the project, including Foley creation, sound recording, environmental sound design, music integration, audio editing, layering, and mixing.
I also documented the process in a behind-the-scenes segment at the end of the film, demonstrating how I recorded and developed the sound effects using the resources available to me.

Production Approach

The project was completed using basic equipment available at home rather than a professional Foley studio. This limitation encouraged experimentation with everyday objects, practical recording methods, and creative solutions to reproduce sounds that matched the on-screen action.
The project demonstrates my approach to sound as a hands-on process involving observation, recording, editing, synchronisation, and careful attention to detail.

Software

  • Cubase: Audio editing, sound arrangement, layering, and mixing.
  • DaVinci Resolve: Audio synchronisation and integration with the film’s visual timeline.

Behind the Scenes

Following the completed film, a behind-the-scenes segment presents the Foley recording process and explains how the individual sound elements were created and incorporated into the final soundtrack.
This section offers insight into the practical techniques, experimentation, and decisions behind the finished sound design.
